Cycling
Mitchell County is popular destination for cyclists:
- Take your bike or motorcycle across NC Scenic Byway 8o from South Toe through Kona (stop to see Charlie Silvers graves!), Bandana, into Bakersville, and on up to Roan Mountain for gorgeous scenery.
- Participate in the Roan Moan, an 100.5 k endurance ride that starts in Bakersville, NC, and includes some of the most beautiful scenery in southern Appalachia. It happens on the last Saturday of July and includes a Century, Metric Century, and 35-mile ride. All rides are challenging and include the dramatic climb to Carvers Gap on Roan Mountain, elevation 5512 feet.
- Ride the Blue Ridge Parkway from Little Switzerland to the Orchard at Altapass.
